I understand; I also struggle with putting things off, and I feel frustrated with myself when deadlines approach, forcing me to confront what Iโve delayed. However, you donโt have to keep doing this to yourself. You can plan your time wisely and stay ahead of your responsibilities.
If weโre honest with ourselves, we know that much of this unproductive behavior is completely avoidable. Ultimately, you are in control of your own time.
Recognize what is preventing you from achieving your goals, and focus on developing habits that lead to better, solution-driven success.

Letโs reflect on how our phones make us feel when we mindlessly scroll for hours. Thereโs a reason we can lose ourselves in that activity. I may not know the scientific details, but I can guarantee that thereโs a dopamine release that stimulates a part of our brain in a way that nothing else can. This is why so many children today have difficulty finding joy in activities like coloring when they can simply watch Blippi on repeat.
I believe you can replace this sensation by minimizing your time spent on activities that provide instant gratification and instead focusing on those that offer growth opportunities.
You hide from overwhelming urgent tasks.
You often find yourself overwhelmed by urgent tasks. This overwhelming feeling arises because you allow non-urgent matters to accumulate, leaving your nervous system shocked when everything suddenly comes to a halt. Itโs important to understand that you arenโt effectively balancing your life. When significant tasks arise that demand immediate attention or have deadlines, you might not take them seriously.
Learning how to regulate your time and manage tasks is crucial. Many adults struggle with problem-solving because they don’t give themselves the chance to learn from their experiences. Unlike school, where teachers provided opportunities for problem-solving and communication, itโs now up to us as adults to create those opportunities ourselves.
If you are known for frequently dropping the ball on your responsibilities, it’s important to recognize that the key to your success lies within you. Only you can identify what is holding you back. Consider what is preventing you from achieving your goals and address it. More often than not, it comes down to not taking your responsibilities seriously. If you treat your tasks as if they were a paid job, you will likely notice a significant improvement in how you manage your life.

Youโre afraid of stillness.
I often say that Stillwater is the most dangerous water, and stagnant people can be the most dangerous as well. However, donโt confuse this with being still in the sense of being present and aware of your current situation. You cannot map your life if you donโt know where your feet are planted at any given moment.
It is okay to take a breather. It is okay to reassess your direction. Being still doesnโt mean lacking progress; rather, it can signify so much more if you understand that this moment of stillness is meant for moving forward. Everyone deserves time to reevaluate what theyโre doing, how theyโre doing it, and where itโs leading them.
When your mind is overwhelmed with various concernsโwhether they be worldly matters, family issues, relationships, or sports it can feel as though your life is constantly in motion. This overwhelm can create stress and distract you from focusing on what truly matters. Today, we are trying to determine if weโre personally distracting ourselves. Sadly, we can sometimes be our own distractions, which is why itโs so important to seek out quietness and peace. Finding that stillness will help you understand who you are, what you want, and what your purpose is in this world.
You reward procrastination with productivity.
I am the type of person who tends to procrastinate. I graduated with a master’s degree, with a GPA of 3.9, and I procrastinated throughout the two years of my program. Whether it was studying the night before or just two hours before a test, I managed to cram a lot of information and still ace my exams. However, during those tests, I absolutely hated myself for putting myself in that situation.
It didnโt help that I was successful at it. I was getting Aโs the entire time, so I didn’t feel the need to change my habits. Validating my procrastination by constantly putting myself in situations where I had to learn information in a short time frame. I could have been studying for weeks leading up to the tests, eliminating the stress and doubt I felt before taking them. Instead, I would enter an exam, unsure if I would pass, but still betting on myself to succeed. Imagine how well I could have performed if I had actually studied thoroughly!
While procrastination can give you a temporary high, it is not a healthy way to promote growth and development. It does not teach you how to prepare for a test or develop the positive habits that come with consistent studying. Procrastination is not a beneficial trait, no matter how you look at it. You are putting yourself through unnecessary stress, especially when you have the opportunity to prepare and choose not to.
I like to think of it this way: some people procrastinate and consistently miss deadlines, forget things, and drop the ball. Those people could easily be you if you’re not careful. Therefore, itโs crucial to adopt certain habits that can help you avoid letting yourself down or disappointing your family and friends, all while keeping you aligned with your goals.
Conclusion
The question is, am I, or could I be a distraction from my goals? The answer is yes. Take a moment to sit down and find a piece of paper. Write down ten goals that you have. Underneath each goal, jot down everything you’ve done today to keep yourself from achieving those goals.
Next, figure out how to maximize your time and growth. Put strategies in place to ensure you do not remain stagnant or procrastinate. It’s essential to keep yourself accountable for your goals and habitsโthings you promised yourself.
Remember, nobody owes you anything; you owe yourself everything. The book of your life is in your hands, and itโs up to you to read it. You must take that knowledge and apply it to your life to grow and discover your purpose in this world. No one else will tell you that because the answers are within you; itโs just up to you to uncover them.
