What is discipline?
The discipline encompasses various aspects, definitions, and meanings. In this discussion, I want to focus on discipline as the quality of behaving in a controlled manner while adhering to rules and standards, particularly those we set for ourselves.
Without discipline, we lack guidelines and rules for living our lives effectively and efficiently. Unfortunately, discipline is not something we are born with; it must be developed. Attaining discipline often involves making small sacrifices with the hope of creating a better future for ourselves.
We need to assess our habits, routines, and daily activities to see if they truly align with our goals. Discipline often has a negative connotation, but I’m here to tell you it is much more than that. When you shift your mindset to view discipline as a positive force, you will significantly increase your chances of success.

To teach you to persevere, endure, and resist temptations. Discipline must be a choice; it has to be self-imposed. Much of the journey toward discipline can feel lonely because many people lack self-discipline and struggle with emotional, physical, and spiritual control. As you start on this path toward a higher purpose and self-discipline, remember that it can be challenging to have someone by your side.
If you have been following me for a long time, you know that my favorite word is “no.” Interestingly, the golden rule of discipline is learning to say no, not just to others, but also to yourself. Saying no establishes boundaries, which is something you likely learned early in life. You have the right to set boundaries, and it’s crucial to assert them with confidence. This includes saying no to wasting time or engaging in harmful activities.
Most disciplined people I know are optimistic, resilient, and able to bounce back quickly. I’ve also heard that those who exhibit strong self-control tend to be happier than those who don’t. People are naturally drawn to individuals who work hard and live with integrity.
How Can Discipline Actively Change Your Life?
Following through on your goals makes you stronger and helps you stay focused. Truly disciplined individuals have a single-minded focus; nothing and no one can distract them from their objectives. Everyone has the same 24 hours in a day.
While discipline often carries a negative connotation, itโs important to recognize that its positive aspects are designed to train our minds and bodies to stay focused on our goals and regulate our emotions.
Many people struggle with confidence as well as mental and physical strength. Discipline can help you grow not only as an individual but also in your roles as a parent, friend, teacher, or even as a content creator. Discipline places the responsibility entirely on your shoulders. Ultimately, itโs your choices that will lead you where you want to go. When you take control of your destiny instead of waiting for someone else to do it for you, you will reach your goals much faster, and the journey will feel more rewarding than if you had waited for others to take action.

Where to start?
Iโve observed that people who lack discipline often experience conflicts, misunderstandings, and failures in their commitments. They also struggle to regulate their emotions, which can lead to stress, anxiety, and an inability to face challenges, traits often seen in people pleasers.
Itโs crucial to clarify that discipline is not the same as physical abuse. You should treat your body and mind kindly and avoid abusing yourself. The negative connotation associated with discipline often stems from how many of us were raised, as well as experiences with harsh disciplinary actions, like those from a bad boss. Discipline should never be used to induce stress or anxiety; rather, it should motivate someone to improve themselves.
So, my advice is this: do not confuse discipline with abuse. Understand both concepts clearly, and choose to embrace discipline while rejecting any form of abuse.
Where to use discipline
If you havenโt grasped the concept yet, discipline should be centered on yourself, not on anyone else. When you commit to waking up every morning at 6 oโclock, you are demonstrating punctuality and reliability by following through on your promises. Discipline is about what you pledge to yourself, not what you promise others. Focus on the rewards of your discipline rather than the punishment.
Additionally, avoid setting expectations that you know will lead to failure; doing so only sets you up to miss your goals. This isnโt discipline; itโs self-sabotage.
Incorporate discipline into your daily routines, study habits, dietary choices, friendships, and any situation where you need to make decisions that involve saying yes or no.

It’s all about balancing.
Balancing discipline requires understanding your expectations for yourself. It’s important to lead with empathy and understanding. Keep accommodations and modifications in mind because there will be days when you might not feel fully present.
I like to think of two separate people. The first person is highly disciplined. I observe their life, including their home, jobs, work areas, and relationships. Then, I consider a second person who is less disciplined. By comparing the two, I find a balance between them. I donโt want to be unpredictable, nor do I want to feel overly restricted by excessive discipline. The goal is to find a perfect balance that incorporates empathy, accommodations, and modifications for ourselves.
The main purpose of this conversation is to change the negative stigma associated with discipline and turn it into something positive. I want to see more people succeed in their work environments, using discipline as a tool to push themselves closer to their goals. I wake up every day and meticulously plan my time and effort because I understand the benefits of being disciplined. Having that security in myself means I show up for myself, even if others do not, because I deserve it
